VELLORE: Income Tax officials on Friday night seized Rs 24 crore in Rs 2000 denomination notes from a van in Vellore.
The fresh seizure added to the biggest haul of cash and gold post demonetisation, in which over Rs 142 crore unaccounted assets have been recovered in tax operations so far in the state. With this amount, the total seizure in the case has now gone upto Rs 166 crore in a single case.
The seizure of new currency was made by the sleuths from a Tata Ace van in Vellore on the insistence of the accused presently being interrogated in the case.
The vehicle was moving around in Vellore with the cash since Thursday morning when the IT raids began on industrialist Shekhar Reddy’s premises. The seized money belongs to Shekhar Reddy and he had asked one of his friends to keep it in safe custody. Reddy’s friend and the driver of the vehicle have been arrested.
