Jerome Boateng phoned Jose Mourinho to thank him for his interest in him after he snubbed a Deadline Day transfer to Manchester United.
The Bayern Munich defender was just one of a number of centre-backs linked with a last-minute move to Old Trafford on the final day of the transfer window, as Mourinho made a last-ditch attempt to bolster his side ahead of the new season.
Diego Godin, Harry Maguire, Yerry Mina and Toby Alderweireld were the other players linked with a move to United, but in the end the club were unable to complete deals for any of them.
Boateng, who previously played for Manchester City, gave Mourinho a call after the window had slammed shut, and explained why he turned down a switch.
“I had enquiries from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United ,” Boateng told Bild.
“I did not want just to get away from Bayern, but I was thrilled to try a new challenge. I feel well at Bayern. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“I called Jose Mourinho, I told him that his interest was an honor for me and thanked him for trying so hard for me.
“I explained to Jose that it’s difficult to leave Bayern, and if I do, everything has to be in place to top this club.”
